"Pieces of the Heart"

"This series "Pieces of the Heart" I began in 2006, and is one I still feel very compelled to create.  These paintings are a natural path from the "3 Naked Ladies" series and the earlier paintings of "Blue Fish."  Both series travel from reality to illusion as they follow our dreams.

The heart it is ever changing, we give it away, we hold things dear to it, we have it broken, aching, full of love, full of happiness, and sometimes falling to pieces.  Nothing about the heart can be justified, quantified, or explained by reason.  Nor can it be changed by desire.  It is what it is, you feel it or you don't.  I guess it's a lot like life . . . or at least painting it."

"Inspiration comes from many sources and mostly when I least expect it.  Linda (my wife and best friend) grows a large vegetable garden each summer.  In the beginning of each season she talks to what I think is the air but she believes the animals are listening, "If you please leave the garden alone I will provide a harvest of squash, greens, and corn for you after the last frost to help you get through our long winters."  Each year I am amazed, in the middle of pasture and fields where the wildlife roam free they have left her garden alone for us to harvest.  In the fall, as promised, she feeds the wildlife. My first work in this series is inspired by Linda-- her heart and her garden, "Pieces of the Heart."  Let the birds sing, your heart be warm, and always have love on the table. Enjoy!"

Print Information

Along with Russell's passion to paint he has always had the drive to create through the print medium.  He studied printmaking in art school and apprenticed at several print shops exploring many different techniques including lithography, offset, and screen printing.  His thirty years of printmaking continue as he executes the fine art of reproducing his own giclee prints. Owning the finest equipment available Russell calibrates his own colors to expertly match the original.  Each is hand worked to make it one of-a-kind pieces of art-- hand coloring, collages, or mixed media.  He prefers working in small editions from as few as one piece to a small run of 100.  He prints with museum quality archival inks on archival papers and canvas that have been tested for up to 125 years.
